Caribbean - Dominica

PDF Print E-mail

There is no doubt that Dominica is our favourite Caribbean island and we have visited almost every one. The Western side of the island is wild and untouched by tourism and the interior is full of spectacular waterfalls, beautiful mountain walks and thick rainforest full of wild life.

The lack of an international airport has meant that the island has been slow to develop and its rugged geography make it difficult to build. The trip is really quite easy however. There are low cost flights from Europe to Martinique and Guadaloupe from France and from St. Lucia and the fast catamaran ferries of “L’Express des Iles” runs most days from these islands. Alternatively there are regular shuttle flights from Antigua, Barbados, Guadaloupe, Martinique and Puerto Rico.

Diving
The sea of the leeward coast of Dominica is considered one of the best diving sites in the world. There is diving both from Roseau the capital or from Portsmouth.

Whales
The island of Dominica is located on the migration route of a number of different species of whales. It is generally thought to be the best location for seeing whales in the Caribbean.

The Aerial Tram over the rain forest is one of the newest attractions in Dominica. It is a must see for anyone interested in seeing a rain forest, and learning more about why Dominica is so unique.
