Patmos is both, the holy island of Saint John’s Revelation and one of the most beautiful island in the Aegean. Dspite its natural beauty, Patmos has not been over-developed, The heart of Patmos is the wonderful village of Hora, set under the imposing walls of the fortified Byzanitine Monastery of St. John. Some of the houses are truely spectacular and offer some of the best examples of traditional greek architecture. The streets are narrow and cobbled and the whole town has an atmosphere remeniscent of another age when Patmos was an important religious and commercial centre. The port town of Skala below Hora is the largest settlement on the island. It is busy in Summer but also offers a good base for exploring the island. It is a pretty port with lots of authentic restaurants. There are two other small fishing villages on the island Grikos and Campos both picturesque. The island has numerous good beaches and in general offers everything needed for a great relaxing Greek holiday. It is a place of natural simplicity, where the charm of the landscape answers to the religious spirituality of the inhabitants. Here, tourist development does not clash with tradition. |
