About 40 kilometres from Mahé, Praslin is the second-largest granite island of Seychelles and a convenient starting point for visiting the neighbouring islands. It is a relaxing paradise with a rich history and charming legends. It was discovered in 1744 by Lazare Picault. At that time, it was used as a hideaway by pirates and Arab merchants. Most of Praslin, which has an area of 44 sq.m., is covered in tropical forest. Flora and fauna grow together in the heart of the Vallée de Mai, an enchanting nature reserve. A harmony of vanilla plants, the famous "coco de mer" (or double coconut) with their suggestive shapes and some of the most exceptional birds thrive in profusion here. But don’t forget the crystalline sea who offers a breathtaking spectacle of about 800 species of brilliantly coloured fishes swimming among coral reefs and sea shells! Praslin is not as mountainous as Mahè – the highest point being 330 metres – but it has likewise enormous granite outcrops surrounded by lovely beaches and a coral reef enclosing the crystal-clear waters which are so typical of Seychelles. The splendid bay and beaches alternate with smaller ones on which, even in the busy season, you could believe you were the only person in the island. Anse Volbert, or Cote d’Or, to the east of the island, is particularly beautiful, with its pure white sand. At the northernmost tip of the island, Anse Lazio is exceptional for both swimming and snorkelling. Baie Pasquière and Anse Volbert to the north and Baie St.Anne to the south have natural harbours which are best appreciated if you choose to make your trip from Mahè to Praslin by boat. Enjoy your stay in Praslin by relaxing on its beaches of warm sand, in the shade of coconut trees, listening to the placid murmur of the sea and the gay chirping of birds. The most efficient cure to stress! |
