Getting around
During your stay at The Sun House we recommend that you use one of the local Tuk Tuks to get around in & explore the surroundings. The staff will arrange this for you on request. The Sun House is within walking distance of the centre of Galle and the Galle Fort. Walking around the Fort is the best way to soak in its history and to explore the narrow streets, laneways and historic ramparts. A superbly restored vintage Rover is also available.

Getting there & away
Distances between locations in Sri Lanka are not that far, yet the time taken by road to reach a destination can be a somewhat tiring experience. The team at The Sun House can arrange transfers for you by either chauffer driven air conditioned vehicles, sea plane, steam train or helicopter.

The Sun House is a 4 hour drive south from Colombo’s international airport or for guests coming from the centre of the city of Colombo, it is a 3 hour drive. Rather than travelling by road why not transfer directly from your international flight onto Sri Lankan Airlines Air Taxi and arrive in Galle (Koggala airport) in just 30 mins. Koggala airport is only a 15 minute drive from The Sun House.

Once the home of a Scottish spice merchant, this colonial house built in the 1860’s has been converted into a small hotel which exudes a country house atmosphere. With 7 highly individual bedrooms, it is well known for its fine dining, its privacy, its eclectic collection of artwork, books and furniture. Perched high on a hill yet only a 5 minute stroll away from the centre of the seaside town of Galle, The Sun House offers panoramic views of the Galle and the world heritage site of Fort Galle.

This glorious house has been renovated to maintain its colonial charm and elegance. The large central living area is the heart of the house. A place where, at the end of the day, our guests can browse through the eclectic selection of books, sink into a relaxing sofa, listen to whatever music takes their fancy while enjoying a pot of up-country tea or perhaps something a little stronger like the famous “Sun House Sour”.
There are two beautiful tropical gardens; the fragrant frangipani (“temple tree”) garden, leading to the swimming pool, and the mango garden which faces a stunning view of Galle harbour. The gardens are an idyllic and serene place for guests to relax, read, write or sunbathe.

Delicious fusion cuisine is served and meals can be taken in either the dining room, on one of the house’s airy verandas or in the garden under the mango tree. The Sun House is a peaceful retreat offering a friendly and relaxed environment with service that is discreet yet efficient. It is the perfect spot to explore the area and most importantly relax, unwind and eat well!

The Sun House has seven highly individual bedrooms. There are 3 standard rooms, 2 deluxe rooms and 2 premium suites.  All rooms are filled with colonial antique furniture, dreamy four poster beds and each has an elegant bathroom.

The Sun House prides itself on attention to detail.  All rooms have the finest quality bed linen and bath towels, stunning tropical flower arrangements and plenty of interesting reading material. The soft furnishings have been chosen to suit each individual room and its surroundings.

Hibiscus
This spacious deluxe room is beautifully decorated with stunning fabrics and filled with antique furniture. Featuring a new spacious outdoor bathroom surrounded by tropical plants, this room opens onto an airy veranda and The Mango Tree garden – the perfect spot to relax and read. The room is air-conditioned.

Araliya
This elegant deluxe garden room opens onto the main veranda and beautiful Frangipani garden overlooking the swimming pool. It is fully air-conditioned with a newly renovated contemporary bathroom.

The Dumas Suite
The Dumas Suite is the newest edition to the Sun House offering unrivalled views over Galle’s tropical hinterland. Built in 2005 and named after the American designer who once lived at The Sun House, the Dumas suite comprises a separate living area, a contemporary spacious bathroom and private balcony. Fully air-conditioned. Described by Conde Nast Traveller as “the most beautiful room in the world.”

Occupying the entire first floor of The Sun House this room is cooled by sea breezes, mountain air and colonial ceiling fans. The room is complete with its own library, sitting room and both an indoor and out door bathroom. The sitting room offers a spectacular sunrise over the distant hills and coconut jungle. The stunning outdoor bathroom has a bath tub where one can sit under the stars and soak away all the worries of the world in absolute peace and beauty. A room with unforgettable views.
